Community Outreach Projects

Habitat for Humanity Home Build
The first Habitat for Humanity house was built in St. Gabriel on Ravier Lane. East Iberville-INC (Industry Neighbor Companies) was a major donor for the project, and many employees of the companies worked on the house. Supporters of the Habitat for Humanity House build participated in a $12,000 Raffle Extravaganza in late 2006 sponsored by the East Iberville Initiative, which includes many East Iberville Industry companies. East Iberville-INC had previously donated $25,000 toward construction of the Habitat home. The goal of Habitat homes is to provide decent, stable housing for lower income families.

Iberville Parish Library "Prime Time Reading" Program
East Iberville children learn that reading is a lot of fun by attending the Prime Time Family time reading program at the East Iberville library. The eight-week program is designed to help families read together and to promote reading to young children. East Iberville-Inc (Industry Neighbor Companies) helps sponsor this program.

Sponsored 20 Children to attend NCAA Regional Women’s Basketball Games
A donation by East Iberville-INC has enabled a group of 20 East Iberville students to attend the NCAA regional women's basketball games March 22-25 in Baton Rouge.

Playmakers Summer Program
East Iberville-INC has been donating scholarships for the past few years for children to attend the St. Gabriel Summer camp at the St. Gabriel Community Center.

Adopt a Family Program
Each year, EI-INC celebrates Christmas with over 30 families including approximately 100 children in the East Iberville community. EI-INC hosts a party and provides each family with food, toys, family gifts and food baskets. EI-INC works together with Social Services and EI High School for this event.

Tax Center
East Iberville students, along with their sponsor, Tracy Martin, were certified by the IRS to provide a free tax center for elderly and low-to-moderate income citizens in Iberville Parish. This was done through the Rural School and Community Trust, in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Social Services and East Iberville School. EI-INC also partnered with Ms. Martin to assist in this project.

East Iberville School Support

Character Books for K-1st Grade
The East Iberville Industry/School Committee donates character Books to kindergartners and first graders at East Iberville School each May. The books are a favorite among students because each student's name is used in the story, and other people and things familiar to each student are incorporated into the story. The books are given out as an incentive for student summer reading. The committee works with the school to gather the information for the stories purchases the books and distributes them.

Donated Defibrillator
East Iberville School has become the first school in Iberville Parish and one of the first in south Louisiana to have an automatic external defibrillator (AED), thanks to a donation by East Iberville-INC and the help of the St. Gabriel Kiwanis club. A defibrillator provides an electric shock to the heart to restore normal rhythm during a heart attack. AEDs can be quickly applied to someone in distress and will automatically determine the need for an electric shock. AEDs have been said to restore normal heart rhythm up to 50 percent of the time, and to increase survival of cardiac arrest up to 20 percent, well above the rate of survival from CPR alone.

The school's coaching staff and nurses were trained with the equipment by an American Red Cross trainer on February 26, 2008.

This is a long-term project taken on by Kiwanis International," said St. Gabriel President Jessie Thomas and member Melvin Lodge, who is also an Iberville School Board member. "We are the first club in our district to get a defibrillator for a school. We started work on this in October and received a very positive response from industry, long before the tragic death of the Glen Oaks student athlete in February."

Career Compass
East Iberville High juniors and seniors are getting a lot of extra help in deciding on a career path, thanks to the counseling provided by Career Compass and funding by East Iberville-INC.

The owners of Career Compass, two former teachers, have been meeting in groups and one-on-one with the students to do career assessments, determine a career and the training required, and fill out the necessary paperwork for college admission or training programs.

Career compass worked with the students to get them all to take the ACT. EI-INC paid to bus students to LSU to take the test. Many students didn't realize how important the ACT scores were to their career options.

Teacher's Appreciation Luncheon
East Iberville - INC has provide an appreciation for the teachers of East Iberville for many years for all their hard work. EI-INC also provides materials, assistance with mock interviews, judging the science fair and other assistance to the teachers.

What is a Process Technology Operator?
Process technology operators control and monitor the numerous systems that run chemical plants. Operators gather information using instrumentation and lab equipment to help maintain safe work areas and keep plants in compliance with regulatory requirements. They also have the responsibility to make sure the equipment and instrumentation they use run properly. Operators work both indoors and outdoors, shoulder to shoulder with chemical engineers, chemists and other professionals. Operators must use their knowledge of computers, math, physics and chemistry to keep their plant running safely and efficiently. They also need strong communications skills - the ability to write, express views orally and listen - in order to succeed at their jobs.

What is P-TEC?
P-TEC, the Process Technology Program, is the standardized curriculum for a two-year associate of applied science degree that prepares students to work as process operators in the Louisiana chemical, oil and gas, manufacturing and power generating industries. This program is available at community and technical colleges in Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, Reserve and Gonzales.

Why is this a Good Career Choice?
Process technology operators make a starting salary of approximately $35,000 and can make up to $40,000 within 30 months. In the next 5 to 10 years, Louisiana chemical plants will experience a shortage of between 5,000 and 10,000 operators. Some of the larger plants will lose nearly half of all their operators to retirement in the next ten years. Plants are looking to revitalize their workforce now and they're looking to accomplish that goal with P-TEC graduates from their areas. "But this is not your grandparents' chemical industry." The notion someone could get a job at a chemical plant because a father, uncle or cousin worked there or knew someone there, faded away long ago. In fact, advancements in technology and the quest for greater efficiency mean the requirements prospective plant workers must meet are higher and more stringent than ever.

How Do I Know This is a Legitimate Program?
The manufacturing industry, including chemical, oil and gas, exploration and production endorse P-TEC. The P-TEC curriculum used by Louisiana community and technical college meets guidelines that are set by the Gulf Coast Process Technology Alliance (GCPTA) and approved by industry. The Louisiana Workforce Commission, which is part of the Governor's Office, recognizes P-TEC as a solution to the worker shortage in the petrochemical industry. In fact, millions of state dollars were used to construct glass laboratories at community and technical colleges offering P-TEC.
